working with the grain
Oracle E-Business Suite is one of the leading Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) applications available. It offers modules to cover Financials (General Ledger (GL), Accounts Payable (AP), Purchase Ordering (PO), Fixed Assets (FA), Accounts Receivable (AR)), Human Resources (HR), Procurement, Supply Chain, Manufacturing, Service, Projects, marketing, Sales and Order Management. These modules may fit your business once properly configured, often there are gaps in the application functionality which need to be filled with customisation.
Oracle Applications customisation a Zen thing, less is more. Bespoke as little as possible but where real requirement gaps are identified, work with the grain of the application to enhance functionality without disrupting the architecture. This results in reduced development time and reduced implementation costs. Development savings will be realised several times over, just ask anyone who has upgraded a heavily bespoked Oracle Financials implementation.
We exploit the in-built flexibility of the system to avoid amending code in the core of the application. A lot of functionality can be provided using descriptive flex fields. Everyone needs custom reports - even if it just bitmapped invoices and purchase orders. Amending any of the core forms is to be avoided wherever possible as the work is expensive, has a greater chance of introducing bugs and will be subject to frequent repeat customisation as Oracle patch the module. Where forms are bespoked you should follow both Oracle and local guidelines to ensure it is easily managed.
